Aussie Goes Bolly

I’ve never really been into cricket (shock – an Australian that’s not into cricket?)... I have always found it incredibly boring… so much standing around (plus the uniforms are ugly)

.. but finally I feel like I’ve been initiated.

Thanks to a show called Aussie Goes Bolly (a new show on cable that follows Gus – an Australian cricket fan through India), I now know a little about cricket etiquette, a lot about the rules and even more about the celebrity cricketers.

Things I learnt last night from an Aussie Goes Bolly:

  • The Aussie Cricket Fan-base is called the Barmy Army
  • Ricky Ponting is the Australian team captain
  • Ricky Ponting sung a song with Bollywood’s equivalent of Aretha Franklin
  • There is a correct way to hold (and throw) a cricket ball
  • If you are in a foreign country, it is probably advisable not to yell “I’m Gus from Australia and I’ve gone Bolly!” (people will think you are odd)

Whilst the show itself is pretty bad (a cross between The Amazing Race, Boys Behaving Badly and Australia’s Wide World of Sports), portraying Australians as ill-cultured buffoons, it’s well worth at least a 5 minute glance.

Til next time!
